These pages are set in the Anglo Saxon Futhorc, letter for letter, so they can be read back into English. Single runes stand in for the digraphs TH, NG, EA, AE, EO, IO and OE. Following Old English practice, C serves for K, F serves for V, CW serves for Q, and Eolh serves for X and Z.

Terms of Use

The terms you agree to by reading these pages.

Agreement

By reading or otherwise using this site you agree to these terms. If any part of them is not acceptable to you, please do not use the site.

Age of readers

This site is written for a general audience and is suitable for readers of every age. Because only an adult can fully agree to terms like these, if you are under the age of eighteen, or under the age of majority where you live, please read these pages with the knowledge of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms on your behalf. The site asks for nothing and gathers nothing from any reader, whatever their age.

What this site is

Teach us the Runes offers study notes, poem stanzas rendered from the Old English, and contemplative reflections on the runes of the Anglo Saxon Futhorc. It is offered freely for learning and for quiet thought.

This is not professional advice

Nothing here is medical, legal, financial, or mental health advice, and nothing here is a substitute for a qualified person. The reflections are an interpretive reading and not a scholarly critical edition. Where the history is genuinely uncertain the pages say so, but any academic work should rest on published scholarship rather than on this site.

Ownership

The writing, the arrangement, the design, and the code of this site belong to Teach us the Runes. The runes themselves, and the Old English poem they carry, are the common inheritance of history and belong to no one.

What you may do

You may read these pages, print them for yourself, and quote short passages for personal study or for teaching, with credit to this site. You may link to any page here freely and without asking.

What you may not do

Do not copy the site wholesale, sell it, or present its writing as your own. Do not scrape it at a rate that burdens the host. Do not attempt to break, overload, probe, or gain unauthorised access to the site, its host, or any account connected to it. Do not use anything found here to harm another person.

On the misuse of these symbols

These runes have been taken up and twisted by movements of hatred. That use is a lie about the history. The runic tradition was tangled with Celtic learning, was carried and copied by Christian monks, and stands open to any person willing to study it honestly. Use of this site, or of anything taken from it, to promote hatred or contempt of any people is forbidden.

No warranty

The site is provided as it is and as it happens to be available. No warranty of any kind is given, whether express or implied. We do not promise that the site will always be reachable, that it will be free of error, or that it will suit any particular purpose of yours.

Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Teach us the Runes and anyone connected with it shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss arising out of your use of this site or your reliance on anything published here.

You cover us

You agree to hold Teach us the Runes harmless from any claim or demand brought by a third party that arises out of your own breach of these terms or your own misuse of this site.

Changes

These terms may change. The version published on this page is always the version in force, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.

Governing law and venue

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, without regard to its rules on conflict of laws. You agree that any dispute arising out of these terms or out of your use of this site shall be brought only in the state or federal courts serving Washington County, Utah, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts and to venue there.

Severability

If any part of these terms is held to be unenforceable, that part is to be narrowed only so far as necessary, and everything remaining stays in full force.
